The rumour mill is working overtime on this story. Google has been rumoured to be producing their own Social networking site with the apt name of Google me. Google already has Google Profiles so it is intended to be a massive overhaul of this service. Facebook dominates the social networking world and has been reported to overtake Google in page views in the US.
Google has tried to replicate a social giant before with its buzz service not making any impact on twitter. Whilst not a bad service it just couldn’t beat the dominance twitter has on the web and societies web 2.0 culture. Its initial privacy issues were the first nail in the coffin. When Gmail users where automatically friends with any correspondents they had using the mail service. Much to the outcry of its users this was soon rectified but it was a solemn reminder that Google has a tight grasp on our mail, docs and searches.
One thing Google is renowned for being able to create things with great functionality. They have amazing developers but significantly lack good design. If this service is to succeed they need to move past the niche geek of android and Gmail and appeal to your average user. It needs to entice its users with ease of use and visual appeal to get them to switch from the giant that is Facebook.
From Facebooks perspective they could be safe in the knowledge that all these “killer” services never seem to amount to anything that overtakes the originator. Google Buzz the “twitter Killer” failed to impress “wolfram alpha the Google killer” failed to impress with its unique way of delivering searches. Facebook did overtake myspace but that was before it was ingrained in our social psyche. People lives and history are in Facebook. Even with the uproar on Facebook’s privacy issues and the “quit Facebook day” all this made little impact on the giant that is Facebook. Google needs to innovate and not replicate if they are to win this impending social networking war.
