Validating HTML and CSS for SEO

February 12th, 2008 by

W3c Validation is the benchmark for website standards, with its online mark-up validator it is the internets most recognised and respected service. It also draws power from its search engine acknowledgement, with Google using the exact same technology to search a site.

With this amount of power it is impossible for webmasters to ignore the advantages of having an error free webpage. Many developers also think that the only thing that these errors effect is browser display, where this is true to a point, its major consequences come from search engine listings and can directly result in the success or failure of your search engine optimisation.

Being error free will allow the search engine crawlers to spider your WebPages efficiently, when it runs effortlessly there is more chance it will crawl more pages resulting in more listings. For any SEO minded person, its obvious that more pages crawled more frequently will increase long tail and generic search results, indicating the importance and relevance of your site.

Having a site that is HTML and CSS invalid will have the opposite effect, deterring the spiders from crawling your entire website and returning less frequently.

There are two standard mark-up levels which all professional designers and developers use, HTML Transitional and XHTML Transitional. XHTML is a direct descendant of HTML but slightly more restrictive and complex, it conforms to XML applications and is widely accepted as more important and modernised than HTML Transitional.

If you would like more information on the W3c Validity of your site you can test it on the W3c homepage by using this link. For more information on SEO call 08701451017 or alternatively use this SEO form.
