SEO: Three Ways to Annoy Your Visitors With Your Homepage
April 15th, 2010 by Jon
When developing your website, you want to make it as attractive, informative and useful as possible. Unfortunately, when trying to make your homepage do all of these things, you can actually end up creating a homepage which the majority of your visitors will find annoying. This can be a major problem for your business. If you run an efficient SEO campaign and direct a large amount of traffic to your site, it can be hugely advantageous for your business. However, if you lose the interest of your visitors immediately because of the homepage you have, your SEO efforts will have been a waste of time.
There are four common errors site owners make when developing their homepages. If you want the results of your SEO campaign to be successful, you should avoid making these mistakes with your website.
The first issue which often arises with a homepage is the design chosen. Clashing colours, obnoxious fonts and a cluttered layout can be extremely off- putting. Internet users like websites which are thoughtfully designed. The colours used must complement each other and the homepage must be pleasant to look at. Whilst it is important to make information of significance stand out, if your choices are too bold and intrusive, your visitors will not want to explore your website further.
Pop-up adverts are popular online but can be extremely annoying for those searching the internet. If a searcher is trying to find relevant and useful information as quickly as possible, an advert popping up in the way of this content will be extremely irritating. Research has found many internet users will leave a website if when visiting the homepage pop-up adverts are instantly displayed.
The issue of time is also relevant because of another common homepage problem. Searchers want to find information as soon as possible and if a homepage takes a considerable amount of time to load, they may quickly tire of waiting and choose to visit a different website instead. Searchers are often not very patient and will find a website which takes ages to load highly aggravating.
Another way to annoy your visitors with your homepage is by creating a web page which does not show them how they can quickly and easily access other pages within your site. Searchers will be looking for information of some kind and you must ensure they know where they can go within your website in order to gather this information. You must display links or a table of contents for your website clearly so visitors can explore your site easily.
A large amount of the traffic visiting your website will arrive on your homepage and so this must be optimised appropriately. Don’t waste time on SEO if your website is not suitable for your target audience.

Pop up ads and not having clearly listed content are a right royal frustration to me.
Another one which I thankfully rarely find these days is the dreaded website completely built in flash, a pain for visitors to find content and a pain for google to read.
