The choice between outsourcing SEO and keeping it internal

September 14th, 2009 by

Making the big decision

Choosing whether to outsource SEO or to employ people to do it internally is a difficult decision that many companies face. Having a website that is competing against many other similar sites is extremely stressful, it is therefore vital that you have some form of aid that puts you ahead of your competition. This helpful tool is called SEO or search engine optimisation. SEO is a very useful marketing aid that allows online business to gain greater exposure and improve the flow of traffic to their site via search engines.

So which one is better? Outsource or in house? Many have debated as to which one to choose and the answer really depends on the needs of each company. However, a lot of experts say that outsourcing search engine optimization may be the best way to go.

Who are the experts?

According to the experts, it is a better option for most companies to outsource their SEO needs rather than internally employing, but who are these experts that seem to have all the answers?

To be an SEO expert, one needs to possess certain skills and competencies. They have studied SEO carefully and have experience applying it. As an SEO expert you have to know a great deal about search engine optimisation, not only its application but also the challenges that it faces. An SEO expert has to be very knowledgeable about the online advertising world. This means that they need to be aware of all forms of internet marketing and not just SEO. These experts are usually able to compare the various marketing tools such as PPC and affiliate marketing to search engine optimisation.

Because many companies and website owners rely on the advice that SEO experts give, it is crucial that these SEO experts are as knowledgeable on the topic as possible.

In or out, what’s it going to be?

You will find that there are both advantages and disadvantages to both ways of applying an SEO campaign. Let’s consider the two. The benefit of hiring an SEO firm to optimise your website is that they already have skilled SEO consultants to successfully employ your campaign and nurture it.
When you do SEO in house, it means that you have to find and recruit search engine optimisation staff that have experience and skill. This can be a difficult task and may cost you much more paying their salary than paying an outsourcing firm for the hours worked. You will also have to invest in ongoing training of search engine optimisation updates.
